About Me
Hello!
I'm Maria Bachman. I first moved to Shelbyville in 2019 with my fiancé, Adam. The first event I attended in Shelbyville was the St. Joseph Oktoberfest and I was impressed by how involved the community was in Shelbyville and their love of diversity (eating tamales at a German festival will always be a great memory!) I was quickly reminded of my upbringing in Jasper, Indiana, where it was instilled in me to always actively give back to my community.
Adam and I quickly filled our calendar with First Friday events, breakfast fundraisers, and Saturday mornings spent at the coffee shop. We truly enjoy getting to know everyone within Shelbyville and decided that this was the place for us to stay.
I graduated from Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis in December of 2017 with a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education and History. Prior to graduating, I worked with the Boys and Girls Club of Indianapolis for 4 years as a Youth Growth Professional, IUPUI Day Camp as a Supervisor, and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee as a camp counselor. I also served 2 terms as an AmeriCorps volunteer in both Indianapolis and Milwaukee. I am a current educator at Perry Township Schools in Southport, Indiana. I have been teaching 8th Grade Social Studies for 5 years now. I have hosted multiple interns and student teachers and love getting to share the value of mentorship with others.
I tell you this because I believe that our students, teachers, and families are our greatest strength. Through my many positions where a Board is present, I understand how even the smallest decision can have the largest impact on students, teachers, and families. I want to work to ensure that the decisions being made are thoughtful so the district that I will one day send my own children to is reaching its full potential.
